Qian Qian (male), born in March 1962 in Anqing, Anhui Province, is a rice germplasm scientist, Research Professor and doctoral supervisor. He graduated from Nankai University in 1983, received an M.S. in Genetics and Breeding from Hokkaido University in 1989, and a Ph.D. in Genetics and Breeding from the Graduate School of the Chinese Academy of Agricultural Sciences (CAAS) in 1995. He joined the Jiusan Society in May 1996 and was elected a Member of the Chinese Academy of Sciences in 2019. He has served as Director General of the Institute of Crop Sciences, CAAS (ICS-CAAS); Deputy Director General of the China National Rice Research Institute (CNRRI); and Director of the State Key Laboratory of Rice Biology, while concurrently serving as Director of the Agricultural Genomics Institute at Shenzhen, CAAS (AGIS-CAAS). He is currently Deputy Director of the Yazhou Bay National Laboratory, a member of the Standing Committee of the 14th National Peoples Congress, a deputy to the NPC, and a member of the NPC Agriculture and Rural Affairs Committee.

 

Prof. Qian Qian has long focused on crop genetic germplasm resources, achieving a series of results of major breeding value in rice germplasm discovery and innovation, dissection of key agronomic traits, and molecular breeding. He has led or participated in projects that won a First Class National Natural Science Award (third contributor), a Second Class National Natural Science Award (second contributor), and a Second Class National Science and Technology Progress Award (first contributor). He has received the NSFC Distinguished Young Scholar grant and the Innovative Research Group grant, and was honored with the 2024 Ho Leung Ho Lee Foundation Prize for Scientific and Technological Progress. As corresponding author, he has published over 90 papers in leading international journals, holds more than 30 invention patents, and has edited three books. He has been recognized under the National “Hundred-Thousand-Ten Thousand Talents” Program, named a National Outstanding Agricultural Research Talent, designated a Distinguished Specialist of Zhejiang Province, and enjoys the State Council Special Government Allowance. “What we have achieved today is the accumulation of generations, embodying the wisdom and hard work of our predecessors,” says Academician Qian, who is affectionately known as the “decoder” of rice’s genetic “code.”
