This commentary highlights the identification of an OsFTL1 allele, TGW1a^JZ, which balances high grain yield with early maturity in rice, delineates the underlying regulatory mechanism through which TGW1a^JZ modulates flowering time and nitrogen utilization, and discusses its broader implications for future breeding strategies aimed at resource-efficient agriculture.
