Mutation Breeding Network for the Asia Pacific Region

Date:2025-09-25Author:Source:

With the support of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) and the China Atomic Energy Authority (CAEA), the Mutation Breeding Network for the Asia Pacific Region (MBN) was established in July 2019, with China serving as the inaugural chair country and Dr. Liu Luxiang, Research Fellow at the Institute of Crop Sciences, assuming the role of the first chairperson. In July 2024, the Network expanded to include seven countries from Europe, Africa, and Latin America, forming the Mutation Breeding Network Plus (MBN+), with its secretariat hosted at the FAO/IAEA Joint Centre. The Network aims to promote the development of new plant germplasm through induced mutation techniques and foster the training of young researchers, thereby enhancing international cooperation in nuclear radiation-based plant breeding. Member entities include the IAEA, the Institute of Crop Sciences of the Chinese Academy of Agricultural Sciences, as well as research institutions from 22 countries and regions such as Australia and Bangladesh. A standing steering committee consists of five countries: China, Indonesia, India, Malaysia, and Japan.

By June 2025, the Network has organized five regional seminars and six training courses, training over 100 participants in total. Through technical exchanges and capacity building, it has provided nuclear radiation-induced mutation technology service to countries including Mongolia and Nepal, helping to advance their breeding capabilities. The Network has also hosted scientific visits by expert delegations from multiple countries, including Bangladesh, actively facilitating the creation of new mutagenized plant germplasm and nurturing young scientific talent.
